The arrival of human monkeypox in the US in 2003, carried by imported African Gambian rats, is just one example of the dangers associated with transporting exotic animals to new environments. The spread of disease is a major concern for researchers studying the growing popularity of exotic household pets. They found that reptiles, monkeys, rodents, and other exotic animals are vectors for diseases like salmonella and rabies. About 11% of salmonella cases in children are believed to result from contact with lizards, turtles, and other reptiles; even hamsters and baby chicks carry this germ. The separatist Quebec Liberation Front's (FLQ) kidnapping of Pierre Laporte, Quebec's vice-premier and minister of labour, touched off the October Crisis and led the Canadian government to assume sweeping emergency powers to combat the insurrection.
