Elephant Addict Free of Drugs

Four-year-old Xiguang became addicted to heroin in 2005, when animal smugglers illegally fed the Asian elephant bananas laced with the drug to lure and capture him. When authorities first freed Xiguang, they were confused by his strange behavior; his eyes were tearing and he kept making trumpeting noises. Eventually, they discovered that he was suffering from withdrawal and began a methadone program to help him kick his drug habit. After more than a year of receiving methadone injections at five times the human dosage, Xiguang is finally drug free and will be transported to a wildlife reserve in southwest China.
